THE HEAD OF THE CHURCH IS JESUS CHRIST

 

 

I. TEXTUAL THOUGHTS

                1. Ephesians 1:20-23- God made Jesus head over the church.

                2. Colossians 1:15-18- He is head because of His preeminence.

                3. Ephesians 5:23-24- The church is subject to Christ.

                4. Colossians 2:16-19- The body grows from the head.

 

 

II. MAIN THEME- God planned to make all things complete in Jesus Christ.  Jesus purchased the church with His blood and gives life to those who submit to Him in His body, where His word provides life and His protection provides security.

                1. Jesus Christ is head of the church because:

                                a. God made Him head, Ephesians 1:20-23.

                                b. He is preeminent in all things, Colossians 1:15-18.

                2. The head controls the body because:

                                a. He directs the body to grow, Ephesians 4:11-16.

                                b. His spirit controls us, Galatians 5:22-26.

                                c. We have the mind of Christ, Philippians 2:1-16.

                3. He leads by His word.

                                a. He speaks the words of His Father, John 12:46-50.

                                b. His words are spirit and life, John 6:63.

                                c. His word is our authority, Hebrews 1:1-3, Galatians 1:6-9, Jude 3.

                4. He protects the church by His love.

                                a. He gave Himself for the church, Ephesians 5:23-29.

                                b. Love supplies our bond of perfection, Colossians 3:12-16.

                                c. No outside force can separate us from God's love, Romans 8:28-39.

                5. We must remain in Him to receive His blessings.

                                a. A branch separated from the vine dies, John 15:1-6.

                                b. Our love for each other is evidence of our being in Jesus, John 15:7-17.

                                c. When we love him we keep His commandments, John 15:10-14.

 

 

III. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

                1. Because Jesus is our head, we should listen  to Him, Mat. 17:5,  Heb. 2:1-4.

                2. Do not allow men to take the authority that belongs only to Jesus, 1 Peter 4:11,

                    5:1-4.

                3. Remain steadfast in loyalty to Jesus and His gospel, Colossians 1:19-23,

                    Ephesians 4:1-3, 1 Corinthians 15:1-2.

                4. Avoid those claiming some revelation different than the gospel, Galatians 1:6-9,

                    2 John 5-11.

                5. Practice loving each other, Ephesians 5:1-2, Colossians 3:14-15, John 13:34-35.
