GODLINESS

 

 

I. TEXTUAL THOUGHTS

                1. 1. Timothy 3:16- The mystery of Godliness is revealed in Jesus Christ.

                2. 1 Timothy 4:6-10- Godliness is profitable for all things.

                3. 1 Timothy 6:11-12- We must pursue godliness.

                4. 2 Timothy 3- The ungodly contrasted with the godly.

                5. 2 Timothy 3:10-12- The godly will be persecuted.

 

II. MAIN THEME-Jesus Christ revealed what it means to be Godly by His life and teachings.  To be like Jesus is to be godly.  The power to live a godly life comes from our relationship to God in Jesus Christ.

                1. Godliness results from our relationship to God in Jesus Christ.

                                a. Because we have been born again, 1 Pet 1:18-24; John 1:12-13.

                                b. Because we are holding fast to Jesus, 1 Tim 6:11-12; 1 Cor 15:1-4.

                                c. Because we are developing Christian attitudes, 1 Pet 2:11-21; 2 Pet 1:1-11.

                2. Love is the foundation of Godliness.

                                a. Because love was God's motivation for our salvation, John 3:16; 13:34-35.

                                b. Because love produces obedience to God's will, 1 John 1:3-6; 5:1-3.

                                c. Because godliness is a gift from God, Rom 3:22-24; 5:1-2; Gal 2:16.

                3. Selfishness is the foundation of ungodliness.

                                a. The ungodly seek to please themselves, 1 Tim 6:3-5, 9-10; James 4:1-4.

                                b. The ungodly promote their own teachings, 2 Tim 2:14-19; 2 Pet 2:10-22.

                                c. The ungodly want to be teachers of the law, 1 Tim 1:3-11; 4:1-5; 6:3-21.

                4. Godliness is a great blessing.

                                a. Godliness with contentment is great gain, 1 Tim 6:5-12; Phil 3:8-11.

                                b. The godly are blessed by giving, 1 Tim 6:17-19; 4:11-16; 2 Tim 4:6-8.

                                c. The godly will spend eternity with God, Rev 21:2-8; 24-27; 22:3-5.

 

III. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

                1. Godliness involves trusting God's will and His power in our lives, submitting our

                                own will to the will of God.  Titus 3:1-5; 2:11-14; Phil 2:1-16.

                2. Jesus is our example in godliness, we must try to be like Him.  Heb 12:1-2;

                                Rom 1:16-17; 1 Pet 2:21-24; John 13:15.

                3. It is not always easy to live a godly life.  2 Tim 3:12; 1 Cor 4:9-13; 2 Thes 1:3-5;

                                1 Pet 4:4, 12-14.

                4. Worthless arguing about opinions, words, and points of law hinders godliness.

                                Titus 1:10-16; 3:9-11; 2 Tim 2:14-19; 1 Tim 1:3-7; 4:1-3; 6:3-5.
