II. MAIN THEME- God's servants are to hold fast to the teachings given through the apostles so that they can be effective in edifying the church.  Arguments about words and efforts to bind the law produce envy and strife, and are used by some false teachers for selfish purposes.  Teaching sound doctrine produces unity and edifies the church.

                1. Sound doctrine is:

                                a. The wholesome words of Jesus Christ, 1 Tim 6:3; John 14:23-26; Acts 1:8.

                                b. Useful for building up Christian faith, Titus 1:9, 13; 2 Tim 1:6-13;

                                    John 20:31; 2 Pet 1:1-4.

                                c. Knowing we are justified by grace, 2 Tim 1:9-10; Titus 3:3-7.

                2. Sound doctrine is not:

                                a. Teaching your opinions as law, 1 Tim 1:3-7; 1 Tim 6:3-5; 20-21.

                                b. Binding laws about physical things, 1 Tim 1:7-11; Col 2:18-23.

                                c. Thinking we are justified by keeping law, 1 Tim 1:6-7; Rom 14:1-13;

                                    Gal 3:1-14; 5:13-15; Titus 3:9-11.

                3. Sound doctrine teaches us how to live godly lives.

                                a. By having right attitudes toward others, 1 Tim 5:1-6, 14-16; 2 Tim 2:24-26;

                                    James 1:26-27; 1 Pet 2:11-3:9; 1 Cor 13.

                                b. Because we want to please God, 1 Tim 6:11-16; Titus 2:11-14;

                                    1 John 3:22-24; 5:1-3.

III. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

                1. Be sure you are living what you teach, Titus 2:2-8; 2 Tim 1:13; 1 Tim 4:11-16.

                2. Be sure to speak the things God has given us by the Holy Spirit in the Bible,

                                John 20:31; 1 Tim 6:3; 2 Tim 2:1-2; 3:14-17.

                3. Do not teach false doctrine in order to get money or develop a following for yourself, 2 Tim 4:1-5; 1 Tim 6:3-11;

                                Titus1:10-16; 2 Pet 2:1-3, 10-22.

                4. Do not be obsessed with arguing and getting your own way, 1 Tim 6:3-5;

                                Gal 6:2-4; Eph 4:1-3, 12-16, 29-32.
