5:12-6:20 - We need to grow up from the elementary doctrines and become
mature, doing the good works that
accompany salvation, learning to be more like Christ. God cannot lie, and He has sworn by an
oath that He would bless the offspring of Abraham, who we are by faith. 1. We need to grow up - verses 5:12-14 a. so that we can become teachers - verse 12;
Eph 4:11-13; 2 Tim 2:2; James 3:1-2 b. by studying God’s word - verses 13-14; 2
Tim 2:15; 3:14-17; 2 Peter 1:19-21 2. We need to go on to completeness - verses
6:1-2 a. by leaving the discussion of elementary
principles - verse 1; b. by growing toward completeness - verse 1;
Eph 4:13; James 1:2-8, 25; 1 Pet 5:8-10 3. Because if we do not grow up we may fall
away - verses 4-6 a. when one has already been enlightened, and
tasted the heavenly gift - verses 4-5, 2 Peter 2:20 b. and turns back to the world - verse 6; 1
John 2:15-17 c. it may be impossible to get them to repent

nature - verses 13-20 a. God made a promise to Abraham - verses

endurance- verse 15; Rev 2:10 c. The promise and the vow made the blessing
certain, because God cannot lie - verses 16-18 d. We are heirs of that promise by faith -

- verse 20; Heb 10:19-25; III. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 1. We need to establish our faith through trials and suffering before becoming teachers - Hebrews 5:14; 6:9-10 2 Tim 2:2; 1 Peter 1:5-7 2. A teacher must understand the power of God and learn to trust His power - Heb 6:14-19; 2 Cor 1:8-11; 12:9 3. There are immature and mature teachings in the Bible, and we need to learn to grow beyond the immature or elementary principles - Hebrews 5:12-14; 6:1-2; 1 Tim 4:4-7, 12-16; 6:3-5; 2 Tim 3:10-12, 16-17; 4:3-4; Titus 1:7-9; 2:1-14; 2 Jn 1:6-11 (mature doctrine relates to how we live our lives as Christians) 4. It is possible for a child of God to sin so as to be lost eternally - Hebrews 6:4-6; 10:23-27; Rev 3:5; John 5:14-17 2 Peter 2:20-22; Acts 8:21-22 5.
