1 TIMOTHY

 
I.  BACKGROUND

        1. Author - Paul, the apostle: 1:1

        2. Date - one of Paul's later letters written in A.D. 62-64

        3. Setting - Paul writes to his beloved friend, Timothy who has remained at Ephesus to work with the churches.  After their

             beginning, there had been some false teaching, so it was now necessary to deal with those situations.

 

II.    PURPOSE OF THE BOOK

        1. Key Verses:  1:3-7, 18-20;  3:14-16;  4:12-16;  6:20-21

        2. Theme:  Timothy is charged to oppose the false teaching with sound doctrine and to guard and teach the church how to

            uphold godly lives.  He is personally charged to exercise godliness and to fulfill his ministry, not neglecting himself and

            his calling.

        3. The false teachings were: 1:3

                1) Concerning law-keeping:  1:3-11;  4:1-3;  6:3-5, 20=21

                2) Concerning riches:  6:5-10, 17-19

        4. The healthy teaching were:  1:10;  4:6;  6:3

                1) Faith and a good conscience:  1:4-5, 19;  3:9;  4:12;  6:11-12

                2) Godliness:  2:10;  3:16;  4:6-8;  6:3-8,11

                3) Good works:  2:10;  3:1;  4:10;  5:10, 17,25:  6:18

        5. Timothy's specific responsibilities included:

                1) Teaching:  3:14-15;  4:11,13,16;  6:3

                2) Warring against the false:  1:3,18;  5:20;  6:12,17

                3) Guarding and fleeing:  3:14-15;  4:14-16;  6:11, 20

                4) Being an example:  4:12;  5:1-2, 25;  6:11

 

III.   APPLICATIONS - LESSONS

        1. The uselessness of striving about words:

                1) What are the type of words that men strive about?

                        a. Fables:  1:4;  4:7

                        b. Endless genealogies:  1:4

                        c. The law:  1:7-8

                        d. Ungodly and untrue questionings:  6:3-5, 20

                2) What is the result of this worthless arguing?

                        a. It just brings up more questions:  1:4

                        b. It serves no worthy purpose; only a waste of time:  1:6

                        c. It works against true godliness:  4:6-8;  6:3-5

                        d. It produces strife and evil suspicions:  6:3-5

                        e. It upholds false knowledge and distorts the truth:  6:20

 

                3) How should we deal with this ungodly argumentation?

                        a. Teach people not to be involved in this:  1:3-4

                        b. Refuse to be involved yourself:  4:7;  6:20

                        c. Seek the healthy teachings:  6:3

                        d. Content with what God has given you:  6:6

        2. The qualities of leaders:

                3) Those who seed to be "Men of God":  6:11-16

        3. The Value of Prayer:

                1) Supplications, thanksgiving, intercessions...: 2:1

                2) For all those who are in a ruling position: 2:2

                3) That we may lead a tranquil and quiet life:  2:2

        4. Men's and women's roles:

                1) Women are to learn in quietness with all submission:  2:11

                        a. Because Eve was created second: 2:13

                        b. Because Eve was the first to sin:  2:14

                        c. Therefore, do not have dominion over a man:  2:12

                2) Men should realized their position as given by God:

                        a. That they should be holy and without anger:  2:8

                        b. That they are not to force the woman's submission:  2:11-12

                        c. That they also are sinners:  2:14

        5. Money matters:

                1) Be content with what God has given you:  6:6

                2) We only have basic needs:  6:8

                3) The desire to be rich can be very destructive:  6:9

                4) Do not love money:  6:10

                5) If you are rich, do not be arrogant:  6:17

                6) If you are rich, do not set your hope on riches:  6:17

                7) If you are rich, also be rich in good works:  6:18

                8) If you are rich, be willing to share with others:  6:18
