ACTS

 

 

I.  BACKGROUND

        1. Author - Luke, companion with Paul:  1:1-4;  1:1-5.  The "we" reference of Luke:  16:1-17;  20:5-21;  27:1-28:16

        2. Date - Events - A.D. 29-65      Writing:  A.D. 62-65

        3. Setting - Acts is a continuation of the account given in Luke's gospel and was probably written during Paul's first

            imprisonment at Rome.

 

II.    PURPOSE OF THE BOOK

        1. Key Verse:  1:8

        2. Aim:  to show the spreading of the gospel, and the growth of God's kingdom throughout the world, beginning at Jerusalem.

        3. Outline of the book:

                1) The coming of the kingdom on Pentecost fulfilled prophesy: Acts 1:1-2:13;  Joel 2:28-32;  Isaiah 2:2-3

                2) The kingdom was confirmed with power:    Acts 2:4-36,43;  3:1-11;  4:33;  5:1-11, 12-16

                3) The church established in Jerusalem: Acts 2:36-47;  4:1-4, 5-13, 26-40

                4) Persecution causes spread of the gospel: Acts 5:41-42;  8:1-4, 5-13, 26-40

                5) Saul is converted and becomes the Apostle to the Gentiles: Acts 9:1-19 (22:6-21);  9:20-29

                6) Peter carries the gospel to the Gentiles: Acts 10:1-11:18 (15:7-11)

                7) Paul carries the gospel to the Gentiles: Acts 11:19-21:16

                8) Paul carries the gospel to Rome: Acts 21:17-28:31

 

III.   APPLICATIONS - LESSONS

        1. The appearance of the resurrected Christ to many produced faith.

                1) To His apostles:  Luke 24:44-49;  Acts 1:1-11

                2) To Saul on the road:  Acts 9:1-19

                3) Jesus' resurrection is the basis for faith:  1 Corinthians 15

        2. The miracle established the faith of the church.

                1) The apostles performed miracles:  2:43; 3:1-16;  5:12-16

                2) The power to perform miracles was given through the laying on of the apostles' hands:  6:1-6; (6L8 & 8:6); 8:14-19

                3) The written miracles and message produces faith in us today. John 20:29-31

        3. The gospel is God's power for salvation to those who believe.

                1) Peter's  sermons:  2:16-36;  3:12-26;  10:34-43

                2) Philip's messages:  8:5, 35
