ZECHARIAH

 

I.  BACKGROUND

        1. Author - Zechariah the son of Berechiah:  1:1

        2. Date - 520 B.C.: 1:1

        3: Setting - The book is divided into two primary divisions:  Chapters 1 – 8 delivered during the rebuilding of the Temple in

            Jerusalem and chapters 9 - 14 dealing with prophecies concerning the future of Israel, both physically and spiritually

 

II. PURPOSE OF THE BOOK

        1. Key Verses:  1:2-3;  9:  2:1;  3:3;  5:3;  9:4;  10:6;  13:2;  14:3-5

        2. Theme:  The first division of Zechariah deals with the calling of the people to accept the fact that God is everywhere at all

            times, the reality of sin and the need for God's pardon.  The second division deals with how God will use physical forces to

            prepare the way for the Messiah and His ultimate victory.

                1) God's message to Israel:

                        a. The Lord's call to repentance: 1:1-6

                        b. Divine visions:  1:7 - 6:8

                        c. Crowning of the King:  6:9 - 7:1

                        d. Concerning fast days:  7:1 - 8:23

                2) The prophet's visions

                        a. Future of world powers and God's people:  9:1 - 11:17

                        b. Victories of Israel:  12:1 - 14:21

 

III. ABOUT THE MESSIAH

        1. His atoning death:  3:8-9;  13:1

        2. Builder of God's house:  6:12

        3. His universal reign:  6:13: 9:10

        4. Triumphant entry:  9:9

        5. Price of His death:  11:12

        6. His body pierced:  12:10
