THE SECOND COMING OF JESUS

 

 

I. TEXTUAL THOUGHTS

            1. Acts 1:9-11- The angels promised the return of Jesus.

            2. 2 Thessalonians 1:7-10- He will come with great power.

 

 

II. MAIN THEME- Jesus promised His disciples that He would come again.  Angels announced at Jesus ascension into heaven that He would come again in the clouds.  When Jesus comes back, every eye shall see Him, and the heavens and earth will melt with a fervent heat.  But we look for a new place where righteousness dwells, and we shall be in the presence of God forever.

            1. Jesus' return is promised in scripture.

                        a. Angels promised His return, Acts 1:9-11

                        b. Jesus promised to return, Rev 22:20.

                        c. No one knows the time of His second coming, 1 Thes 5:1-11; Mat 24:36-44.

                        d. The day of the Lord will come as a thief, 2 Pet 3:1-10.

            2. Characteristics of His second coming:

                        a. He will come with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, 1 Thes 4:16.

                        b. He will come with great power, 2 Thes 1:7-10; 2 Pet 3:10.

                        c. The dead will be raised, John 5:26-29; 1 Cor 15:55-58.

                        d. He will bring judgment and vengeance for the wicked, 2 Thes 4:13-18.

                        e. He will bring salvation and comfort to His people, 1 Thes 4:13-18.

            3. All Christian should be waiting for His coming.

                        a. He will deliver us from the wrath to come, 1 Thes 1:10;

                        b. He will give us a new body, Phil 3:20-21.

                        c. He will give us the fullness of salvation, Heb 9:27-28.

                        d. He will fulfill our hope, Titus 2:11-13.

                        e. He will accomplish a glad reunion, 1 Thes 4:13-17.

 

 

II. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

            1. The hope of Jesus' return should help us in our lives:

                        a. To keep from loving this world, Phil 3:20; 2 Pet 3:14; 1 John 2:15-17.

                        b. To remain steadfast and unmovable, 1 Cor 15:58; Heb 3:12-19; 4:1-11.

                        c. To comfort, exhort, and build up, 1 Thes 4:18; 5:11; Phil 2:1-4, 16.

                        d. To be prepared as sons of light, 1 Thes 5:4-10; Mark 13:32-37; Phil 3:20-21

            2. The knowledge that the physical world will be burned up should help us to put

                spiritual things first in our lives, and should increase our trust in God's grace,

                2 Pet 3:11-18; John 1:16-17; Rom 5:1-2.

            3.Knowing our treasure is in heaven will make us trust spiritual values in our

                lives, Mat 6:19-34; 19:21; Luke 6:22-23; 1 Pet 1:4.

            4. We should use our physical resources to make friends for eternity,

                Luke 16:9; Proverbs 11:30.

            5. When someone says they know when Jesus is coming again, we should

                know that person is a false prophet, 1 Thes 5:2; Mat 24:36; 2 Pet 3:10.
