THE PROPHETS

 

 

I. TEXTUAL THOUGHTS

            1. Deut 18:15-22- God's prophets speak the words of God.

            2. Deut 18:10-14- Do not listen to false prophets or sorcerers.

            3. Ps 22- David foretold the death of Jesus.

 

 

II. MAIN THEME:  God spoke to His people through prophets who foretold the future and predicted the coming of the Messiah, who would deliver mankind from the bondage of sin and the fear of death.  Jesus is the prophet who reveals God to us in a way we can understand.  Jesus is the prophet we are to hear today.  We are warned against listening to false prophets who give a different message than Jesus.

            1. Some prophets of the Old Testament.

                        a. Joseph predicted future events, Gen 37:6-10; 41:1-32.

                        b. Moses told the future of Israel, Deut 29 and 30.

                        c. Daniel told about the coming kingdom, Dan 2:24-45; 7:1-27; 9:21-27.

                        d. David told about Jesus on the cross, Ps 22.

                        e. Isaiah told about the suffering of Jesus for the sins of the world, Isaiah 53.

            2. Prophets of the New Testament.

                        a. John the Baptist foretold the coming of Jesus, Mat 3:1-3; Mark 1:7-8;

                            Luke 3:3-18; John 1:29-36.

                        b. Jesus Christ foretold his own death, Luke 9:22; 18:31-34;Mat 16:21-23.

                        c. Jesus foretold the destruction of Jerusalem of AD 70; Luke 21:5-24;

                            Mat 24:4-22.

                        d. Jesus foretold the coming of false prophets, Mat 24:4-5; Luke 21:8.

                        e. Peter warned of false prophets, 2 Pet 2:1-3; 2 John 7-11; 1 John 2:18-27;

                            2 Thes 2:1-12.; Gal 1:6-9.

            3. Jesus is the prophet we are to hear today.

                        a. As foretold by Moses, Deut 18:18; Act 3:22-23.

                        b. God speaks to us through Jesus, Luke 9:30-35; Heb 1:1-3.

 

 

III. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

            1. Prophecies about Jesus from the Old Testament help build our faith, Ps 22;

                16:10; 34:20; Isaiah 53; 61:1-2; Zech 9:9; 11:12; 12:10; Dan 2:44; 7:13-14.

            2. The prophets are part of the foundation for the church, Eph 2:19-22; 4:11-15.

            3. The prophecies are profitable for teaching, 2 Tim 3:15-17; 2 Pet 1:15-21.

            4. Jesus is the prophet God speaks through today, so we must refuse false

                prophets who bring a different message, Heb 1:1-4; Gal 1:6-9; 2 John 5-11;

                1 Tim 4:1-4; 2 Pet 2:1-3; 2 Thes 2:1-12; Jude 3.

            5. God's prophets always speak the truth, Deut 18:22; John 8:25-32.

            6. Compare the message of latter day prophets with the bible, Gal 1:6-9; 1 John 4:1.
