THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT

Ex 20:14--You shall not commit adultery.

Adultery is the breaking of wedlock by having sexual relations with someone other than your marriage partner. Adultery also means apostasy, turning away from faithfulness to God. God forbids adultery because it is destructive. All sin is destructive. God’s forbids our doing things that will keep us from having successful lives. Adultery destroys trust and kills marriages.

Secular humanists have insisted that men and women having sex with multiple partners is the natural way, and that Christians are just trying to keep people from having fun. In the 1960’s the hippies encouraged sexual exuberance, calling it love.

But now in the 21 century we have reaped the cyclone spawned by the flower children sowing to the wind. Broken families and fatherless children are the norm today. And our entertainment industry seems to want to carry things even farther by promoting homosexuality. One has to wonder where they will stop in sponsoring sexual perversions.

King David demonstrated the terrible nature of adultery, with the results foretold by Nathan the prophet, 2 Sam 12:9-12--Why have you despised the word of the LORD by doing evil in His sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon.

Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.

Thus says the LORD, "Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight. Indeed you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and under the sun."

David fled for his life from his own son, who went in to the wives of David in full view of the public. David suffered the untimely deaths of four of his sons. Also the son conceived in adultery with Bathsheba died.

Jesus taught that husband and wife should be loyal to each other so long as both marriage partners live. That was God’s will from the beginning when Adam and Eve became the first marriage partners. But mankind often refuses to honor what God wants.

Jesus said that divorcing a wife for some reason other than sexual infidelity and marrying another partner is adultery, Mat 19. Having a plan to break wedlock is a sin, the spiritual equivalent of adultery.

Jesus set higher standards than the Law. The Law forbade the physical act of having sex with someone other than your marriage partner. Jesus forbade lusting for women, desiring in the mind to have sexual relations with someone not your marriage partner. Matt 5:27-28--You have heard that it was said, "YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY'; but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

Yes, clean lives come from clean thoughts. We need to clean up what we feed ourselves for entertainment. When I was young, some preachers thought it was a sin to go to the movies. What would they think if they witnessed what many of us watch on our TV today?

God respecting families are the foundation for social success. Many forces today are intent upon dismembering the family unit that God intended. Secular humanists believe that mankind should make his own decisions about what is acceptable behavior. I reckon they want people to take their word for what is right behavior. They have wrecked our nation.

Prov 14:34--Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a disgrace to any people.
