THE BIRTH OF THE CHURCH

 

 

I.     THE MISSION GIVEN BY JESUS - ACTS 1:11

A. Jesus With The Apostles - Acts 1:1-3  He Speaks With Them About The Kingdom Of God And What They

                     Should Do.

                B. The Promise Of The Holy Spirit - Acts 1:4-5  He Tells Them To Wait For The Baptism Of The Holy Spirit.

                C. The Mission Given To The Apostles - Acts 1:6-8

                                1. The Holy Spirit was going to give them power.

                                2. They would go out to give testimony of Jesus in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the uttermost

                                    parts of the world.

 

 

II.     THE DISCIPLES CHOOSE SOMEONE TO REPLACE JUDAS - ACTS 1:12-26

A. The Believers Assemble, Some 120.  Among Them Are Found The Apostles, The Brothers Of Jesus, Maria,

                     The Mother Of Jesus; And Some Other Women Disciples -   Acts 1:13-15

                B. Matthias Chosen To Replace Judas - Acts 1:15-26

                                1. In order to fulfill what was prophesied about Judas - Acts 1:15-20

                                2. They proposed as candidates Joseph, called Barsabbas or Justus, and Matthias - Acts 1:23

                                3. They prayed for the Lord to show them which of the two had been chosen., and the lot fell to

                                    Matthias - Acts 1:24-26

 

 

III.    THE COMING OF THE HOLY SPIRIT - ACTS 2:1-13

                A. At The Feast Of Pentecost All The Apostles Are Gathered In The Same Place - Acts 2:1

                B. Suddenly A Sound, Like A Violent Wind Blowing, Filled The House Where They  Were Gathered, And

                     What Seemed To Be Tongues Of Fire Came To Rest On Each                               Of Them - Acts 2:2-3

                C. They Were Filled With The Holy Spirit And Began To Speak In Other Tongues As The Spirit Enabled Them

                     Acts 2:4

                D. The Jewish People, Having Gathered From Many Different Nations For The Festival, Came Together Upon

                     Hearing The Sound And Were Astonished At Hearing The Disciples (Galileans) Speaking In Their Own

                     Languages - Acts 2:5-11

                E. Some Didn't Know What To Think, While Others Made Fun Of Them, Saying They Were Drunk -

                     Acts 2:12-13

 

 

IV.    PETER'S DISCOURSE - ACTS 2:14-40

                A. He Said That What Was Happening Was Prophesied By Joel - Acts 2:16-21

                B. He Preached About Jesus - Acts 2:22-37

                                1.He spoke of his life, death, resurrection, and ascension to sit at the right hand of God - Acts 2:22-35

                                2. He said that Jesus had been made both Lord and Christ - Acts 2:36

                C. The People Respond:

                                1. Upon hearing Peter's message (the gospel), they believed, were cut to the heart and asked what they

                                    should do - Acts 2:37

                                2. Peter told them to repent and be baptized in order to be forgiven of their sins and to receive the (gift

                                    of) Holy Spirit - Acts 2:38

                                3. Peter continued to motivate them to save themselves from the corrupt generation - Acts 2:40

                                4. Some 3,000 people were baptized that same day, forming the first church - Acts 2:41

 

 

V.     THE LIFE OF THE FIRST CHRISTIANS - ACTS 2:42-47

                A. They Devoted Themselves To The Apostles' Teaching - Acts 2:42

                B. They Shared What They Had, Even Selling Possessions In Order To Provide For The Needy - Acts 2:44-45

C. They Continued In Close Fellowship With Each Other And Met Together Daily To Pray, Break Bread, And

                     Praise God Acts 2:42, 44, 46-47

                D. They Were Well Thought Of By All The People - Acts 2:47

                E. The Apostles Performed Many Miracles - Acts 2:43

                F. They Saw The Lord Add Many People To The Church (Implies That They Evangelized Their Friends, Family,

                     And Neighbors) - Acts 2:47

 

 

CONCLUSION - Jesus Promised The Holy Spirit To The Apostles.  When The Day Of  Pentecost Arrived, The Holy Spirit

                               Came Upon The Apostles And The Church Was Born.  Having The Holy Spirit Dwelling Within Each

                               Christian, The Church Began To Do God's Will:  Worshipping God, Ministering To The Needs Of Its

                               Members, And Evangelizing The People.
