EARLY EVENTS AFTER THE ESTABLISHMENT OF THE CHURCH

 

ACTS 3-5

 

 

I.      THE HEALING OF THE CRIPPLED MAN - THE FIRST RECORDED MIRACLE OF THE  PRIMITIVE

         CHURCH - ACTS 3:1-10

                A.   They Healed Him In The Name Of Jesus - Acts 3:6

                B.   He Was Seen By All The People - Acts 3:8; see Acts 4:16

                C.   The People Recognized Him And Remember What He Had Been Like - Acts 3:10

 

 

II.     PETER'S SECOND SERMON - ACTS 3:11-26

A.  The Healing Of The Crippled Man Opened A Door For The Preaching Of The Gospel - Acts 3:11-12

B.   The Sermon - Acts 3:13-26

 

 

III.    PETER AND JOHN: JAILED AND FREED - ACTS 4:1-31

A.  Jailed - Acts 4:1-4

                               1.    Peter and John spoke to the people - Acts 4:1

                               2.    The priests, the captain of the temple guard, and the Sadducees were disturbed that Peter and John were preaching about Jesus and the resurrection of the dead, so they put them in jail - Acts 4:2-3

               3.    Despite such persecution, the church continued to grow - to about 5,000 men - by hearing the message of salvation (and responding favorably to it) - Acts 4:4

                B    Questioned - Acts 4:5-17

1.   The questioning of John and Peter - Acts 4:5-7

                               2.    Peter responds by speaking to them of the gospel - Acts 4:8-12

                               3.    The authorities decided to warn Peter and John to speak no more in the name of Jesus - Acts 4:13-17

                C.   Freed - Acts 4:18-31

                               1.    The authorities ordered them to neither speak nor teach in the name of Jesus - Acts 4:18

                               2.    Peter and John responded that they had to obey God rather than men - Acts 4:19-20; compare 5:29

                               3.    Peter and John threatened further and released - Acts 4:21

                               4.    Peter and John share their experience with the believers - Acts 4:23-31

 

 

IV.    THE BELIEVERS SHARE THEIR POSSESSIONS - ACTS 4:32-37

                A.   All Were One In Heart And Soul And Shared Their Goods - Acts 4:32

                B.   The Apostles Took Charge Of These Activities (Funds) - Acts 4:33, 35, 37

 

 

V.        DISCIPLINE IN THE CHURCH:  THE FIRST RECORDED CASE - ACTS 5:1-11

        A.   Ananias And Sapphira Sold Some Property; Ananias Held Back Some Of The Money But Presented The Rest To The Apostles As If It Were All.  Sapphira Knew What He Was Doing - Acts 5:1-2

B.   They Sinned By Deceiving And Lying To The Holy Spirit - Acts 5:2-8

C.   The Consequences - Acts 5:5, 10

D.   The Reaction Of The Church - Acts 5:11

 

 

VI.    MIRACLES AND PERSECUTION - ACTS 5:12-42

                A.   The Apostles Many Miracles (Signs And Wonders) - Acts 5:12-16

                B.   Because Of Jealousy On The Part Of The High Priest And Certain Of His Associates Who Were Sadducees, The Apostles Were Arrested, But They Were Later Released By An Angel Of The Lord - Acts 5:17-25

                C.   The Apostles, Seen Teaching The People, Were Questioned By The High Priest, Flogged, Prohibited From Speaking In The Name Of Jesus, And Released - Acts 5:27-40

                D.   The Apostles Left The Sanhedrin Very Contented For Having Suffered For The Name Of Jesus; And They Continued To Teach And Preach Daily About Jesus - Acts 5:41-42

 

 

CONCLUSION - AMONG THE FIRST EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES OF THE CHURCH ARE FOUND MIRACLES OF

                               HEALING, THE JAILING OF THE APOSTLES FOR HAVING PREACHED IN THE NAME OF JESUS,

                               AND THE SHARING OF POSSESSIONS AMONG THE BELIEVERS.
