PROMOTE   GOD'S   WORK   BY   FAITH

I. TEXTUAL THOUGHTS

                1. 1 Timothy 1:12-16- Faith was a key in the conversion of Paul.

                2. 1 Timothy 4:6-10- Faith is revealed in the words we teach.

                3. 1 Timothy 6:11-16- Faith must be pursued.

                4. 2 Timothy 1:7-13- Faith gives strength to hold fast to Jesus.

II. MAIN THEME- Christians accomplish God's work through faith.  Faith in Jesus and His power provide the foundation for our life and work.  Through faith we trust God to work in us according to His promises.

                1. We begin our relationship with God by faith.

                                a. Faith is necessary for our conversion, 1 Tim 1:12-16; 2 Tim 3:15; Rom 5:1.

                                b. We must learn to trust God, 2 Tim 1:12; Rom 10:10-17; Heb 12:1-2.

                2. Faith in Jesus will cause us to work effectively.

                                a. It must be a sincere faith, 1 Tim 1:5; 2 Tim 1:5; 1 Pet 1:5-7.

                                b. It trusts God and His power, Titus 1:1-3; 2 Tim 1:12; Phil 3:8-10.

                                c. It causes faithfulness to His word, 1 Tim 1:1-3, 15; 4:6, 11-16.

                3. Faith in God's promises produces strength and dedication.

                                a. He has promised to provide what is needed, 2 Tim 1:7-10; 4:16-18.

                                b. God always keeps His promises, 2 Tim 2:11-13; 2 Pet 3:1-14.

                4. Trusting our own strength prevents our trusting God.

                                a. Trusting money causes harm, 1 Tim 6:3-10; James 3:13-4:4; 5:1-6.

                                b. Trusting human wisdom is wrong, 1 Tim 1:3-11; 4:1-8; 2 Tim 2:14-19.

                                c. Trusting obedience to law for justification destroys faith, 1 Tim 1:3-11;

                                    Rom 3:21-28; Eph 2:9-10; Gal 2:16; 5:1-18; 2 Cor 3:4-6.

III. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

                1. God's work is not accomplished by trusting human wisdom or by emphasizing

                                 human abilities, 1 Tim 1:3-11; 4:1-11; 6:20-21; 2 Tim 2:14-19; Col 2:18-23.

                2. God's work is accomplished by trusting Jesus and His words, 1 Tim 1:12-17;

                                6:11-16; 2 Tim 1:10-13; 3:14-17; Rom 1:16; 1 Cor 2:1-5.

                3. We need to encourage faithful men to take up God's work, 2 Tim 2:2.

                4. Jesus demonstrated perfect trust in God.  We can have eternal life through the

                                faith of Jesus when we believe in Him, 2 Tim 4:1-8; Heb 12:1-2;

                                Rom 1:16-17; Heb 5:8-9; Eph 1:3-14; Jude 3.

                5. The power of the resurrection works in us who truly believe in Jesus,

                                Eph 1:18-20; Rom 6:3-14; Phil 3:8-12; 1 Cor 15:57-58.

                6. The love of money hinders God's work.  When we think that God's work depends on the amount of money we

                        possess, then we are looking to the wrong place for strength.  Having an abundance of money causes us to

                        trust our own plans and  our own strength, and hinders our trust in God.

                        1 Tim 6:3-10; 1 John 2:15-17; James 4:1-8.
