THE MORE PERFECT WAY
I. TEXTUAL THOUGHTS
1. Gal
3:22-29 - The Law was schoolmaster to bring people to Christ; faith in
Jesus replaced the Law
2. Eph
2:11-16 - All are reconciled to God in one body by the cross of Jesus
3. Rom 6:23
& 1 John 1:7-8 - We escape the penalty of death for our sins by the
blood of Jesus Christ
4. Col
1:13-18 & 2:14 - Jesus has delivered us from the Law, and moved us into
His kingdom, in the church
5. Heb 8:10 -
The new covenant must be in our minds and hearts, not engraved on tablets
of stone
6. Rom 8:1-2
- Jesus removes condemnation for those who trust and follow Him
II. MAIN THEME: Hebrews 8 - Jesus, our high priest, is set
on the right hand of God, in the house of God, the church. His priestly ministry is based on the
forgiveness of sins, not a continual offering and remembrance for sins as
under the Law of Moses. The
sacrificial death of Jesus fulfilled the law of sin and death, and brought
in the ministry of life through faith in Jesus Christ.
1. The
priesthood of Jesus is heavenly, not earthly - Heb 8:1-5
a. Jesus is seated at the right hand of God
- verse 1; Acts 2:29-36
b. He is minister of the heavenly
sanctuary, the church - verse 2; Mat 16:16-19; Col 1:13-18 & 2:14; Eph
2:19-22
c. Jesus offered a perfect gift, His own
body on the cross - verse 3; Eph 2:11-16
d. The Levitical priesthood was only a copy
of heavenly things - verses 4-5; Gal 3:22-29
2. Jesus' ministry is more excellent,
He is Mediator of a better covenant, based on better promises - Heb 8:6-13
a. A ministry of life instead of death -
verse 6; Rom 8:1-2; 2 Cor 3:6-18
b. The Law of Moses depended on man's
righteousness for justification - verse 9; Phil 3:9; Rom 8:3-11
c. The law of the Spirit of life in Jesus
Christ depends on the grace and power of God - verses 10-12;
Phil 3:10-11;
Titus 3:4-7; Eph 2:4-10
d. Our relationship with God under the new
covenant depends on our knowing God - verse 11; John 5:24;
6:62-63;
8:31-32, 36.
III.
PRACTICAL APPLICATION
1. We learn about Jesus and
have access to the new covenant by hearing and reading God's word, the
Bible:
Heb 8:10; Mat 28:18-19; Rom 10:15-17; 1 Cor 1:21; 15:1-4; James
1:21-22; 1 Peter 1:22-25
2. Just as Moses was warned
to make the tabernacle according to God's pattern, we are warned to follow
the
pattern
of Jesus Christ in our lives - John 13:15-17; Phil 3:16-20; 1 Peter
2:21-24;
3. The Law of Moses was given to Israel in preparation
for the coming of the Christ, who fulfilled the Law and
brought
in the new covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34. Jesus the Christ fulfilled the Law of
Moses with
His
death on the cross, so that the Law of Moses was no longer binding as a Law
for God's people. The Law written
on
tablets
of stone was replaced by the Spirit of life in Jesus Christ, a covenant
written on the hearts of God's people.
2
Cor 3:6-18; Gal 3:22-29
4. Therefore we should not
think of the new covenant as being like the Law of Moses, a letter of law
covenant that
produced
death because of sin - Heb 8:12. We
should not make laws that God has not made in an effort to justify
ourselves
by keeping physical
laws; laws based on taste not, touch
not, handle not, inspired by human wisdom, have
no
ability to make sinners
righteous - Col 2:18-23; Phil 3:9.
We should not bind the Law of Moses on Christians
today
- Gal 5:1-4.
