II. MAIN THEME: Hebrews 3:1-11 - God’s people, not the tabernacle or a
temple at Jerusalem, are the true house of God. The builder of the house is more worthy of honor than the
house. Therefore we must give
thanks and praise to Jesus Christ, and bring glory to God through the
church.
1. Moses was faithful to follow God’s plan
in building the tabernacle - verse 2
a.
God gave the pattern of the tabernacle - Exodus 25:8-9
b.
Moses followed the pattern - Exod 39:32-43
c.
And the glory of God came and filled the tabernacle - Exod 40:33-38
2. Jesus is
worthy of more glory than Moses - verse 3
a.
The glory of the Law of Moses was a fading glory, because it was
temporary - 2 Cor 3:5-13
b.
God promised a new covenant - Jer 31:31-34
c.
The new covenant was sealed with the blood of Jesus - Luke 22:20;
John 6:53-58; Rom 3:25-28
3. Jesus
built the church, and the builder of the house is worthy of more honor than
the house - verse 3-5
a.
Jesus promised to build His church upon the fact that He is the
Christ, the Son of God - Matt 16:16-18
b.
The church is saved by the life of Jesus - Romans 5:9-18; 6:10-14;
Heb 13:20-21; Eph 2:4-10
c.
The church compared with Mount Sinai - Heb 9:14-16; 12:22-24
d.
Jesus is the pattern for the church - John 5:19-30; Phil 2:5-16;
3:8-21;
e.
That pattern is to be demonstrated in the lives of teachers - 1 Tim
1:16; 2 Tim 1:13; Titus 2:7
4. God wants
to live in His church - verse 6
a.
Christians are the temple of God - 1 Cor 3:16-17; Eph 2:19-22; 1
Peter 2:5-10
b.
Gods glory is to be revealed through the church - Eph 3:8-11; 1 Tim
3:15-16
c.
We need to be filled with the love of Jesus - Eph 3:14-21
5.
Therefore we must hear the voice of God, and not harden our hearts
like the Israelites - verses 7-11
a.
Only the faithful, Joshua and Caleb, entered the promised land, -
Num 14:6-10, 30; Heb 10:36-39
b.
We will be judged by the words of Jesus - Mark 13:31; Luke 9:26;
John 6:63; 12:48-50
III.
PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS
1. Because Christians are
the house of God, our heart and lives should respect God's presence in us,
by:
a. Looking to Jesus for the
needed help - Heb 3:1; 12:2, Phil 2:5
b. The edifying of the body
in love - Ephesians 4:11-32
c. Living holy lives - 1
Cor 3:17; 6:19-20; Eph 1:4; 2:19-22; 5:25-27; 1 Pet 1:15-16;Rev 22:11-15
2. We need to honor Jesus
more than the church, because the builder of the house is worthy of more
honor than
the
house - Hebrews 3:3-5; Col 1:17-18; 3:1-4
3. When Jesus lives in us, our glory is
unfading. The separation from God's
presence is what caused the shining of Moses
face to fade, but as we look at
Jesus, we are transformed into the same image from glory to glory - Hebrews
3:3;
2
Cor 3:4-18
4. We need to listen to the
words of Jesus, because we will be judged based on our response to the
gospel -
John 3:16; Mark 16:15-16; John 12:48; 20:30-31
5. We need to be aware of
God's presence with us, and meditate on His word constantly, giving glory
and praise to
for all the good things he is doing in our lives - Heb 1:1-4;
3:4; Phil 2:10-13
