2:9-18 - Jesus was made perfect (complete) through sufferings. This perfection was the concept of
completing or making full the purpose of Christ’s sacrifice. A true sacrifice is not complete without
suffering. Christ’s sacrifice was
made to be the most complete through the multiple types and degrees of
suffering that he was willing to endure in order to save us. He bore these sufferings for our sake,
thus making Him perfect. 1. The purpose of his suffering was to allow Jesus to understand his brethren through sharing in their humanity, the partaking of flesh and blood -
verse 10-14. a. He was made flesh and blood like us - Luke
2:1-7; Phil 2:5-8; John 1:14; Acts 10:38-39; Rom 1:3-4; b. Therefore He understands our experiences -
Heb 2:11, 14; 4:14-16; Luke 4:1-13; 1 John 2:15-17 2. The purpose of his suffering (death) was
to give him the power to destroy the devil - verse 14. a. By satisfying the punishment for sin - Heb
2:9; 9:26; 10:12; Isaiah 53, Acts 2:25-28 b. By overcoming the power of Satan - 1 Cor
15:54-57; Heb 2:14-15; Acts 2:30-36; 17:31; 2 Tim 1:7-10 3.
The purpose of his suffering was to free all those who were held in slavery
by the fear of death - verse 15. a. By removing our fear of death - 1 John
4:18; Heb 2:11-13; Rev 2:10; 2 Tim 1:7-9; Romans 8:15-17; b. By the power of His resurrection - Rom
1:4; 1 Cor 15:20-22; 1 Pet 1:3-5; 3:21-22 4. The purpose of his suffering was to make
him a merciful and faithful High Priest - verse 17. a. He had to suffer to pay the price for our
sins - Heb 2:9, 17; Isaiah 53; Romans 5:8, John 3:16 b. Because He suffered as a man, He can
understand our situation - Heb 2:10-11; 4:15; Romans 8:28-29 c. So that He would be equipped to intercede
on our behalf in heaven - 1 Tim 2:5-6; 1 Pet 3:22-4:2; Rom 8:34 5. The purpose of his suffering was to make Jesus able to help those who are being tempted because he also was tempted, but endured through suffering - verse 18. a. He can help us when we are tempted - James
1:12-22; 1 Cor 10:11-14; Heb 2:18; 4:15 b. We must endure suffering like Jesus, by
trusting God’s power - Heb 2:10; 5:8-9; Acts 14:22; 1 Pet 2:21 c. If we are faithful, we will share His
eternal glory - 2 Tim 2:10-12; 1 Pet 4:12-19; 5:10; Rev 2:10 III. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 1. Jesus was perfect in nature and character. He never committed a sin, though he was tempted with every temptation like we are tempted. Hebrews 4:15; 2 Corinthians 5:21. 2. Jesus was willing to endure the cross, the sting of death, because he fixed his eyes on the joy that was set before him, rather than focusing
on the pain of death - Hebrews 12:2-3; Luke 22:39-44. 3. God’s purpose in having us face suffering is so that we can grow as His children - Heb 2:10-13; Rom 8:19-22; Heb 12:6-8; 1 Pet 4:12-19 4. We need to try to live pure lives like Jesus by trusting His forgiveness and following Him - Romans 12:1; 1 Cor 3:16-17; Eph 1:3-14; Col
1:21-23; 2 Tim 1:8-10; 1 Pet 1:15-16;
2 Pet 3:11-13; Rev 22:11-12 5. Suffering for the cause of Christ is a great blessing - 1 Pet 4:12-19; 2 Tim 3:12; Heb 12:5-8 IV. MEMORY VERSE - HEBREWS 2:10 |
