GENESIS

 

I. Background

1. Author - Moses, according to Hebrew and Christian tradition.

2. Date - written during the time of Moses, 1520-1400 B.C.

3. Setting - The early history of both the world and mankind is given, covering the first 2000 years and ending

    about 300 years before the time of Moses.

 

II. Purpose Of the Book

1. Key Verses:  Genesis 3:15; 12:1 - promise of the Christ to come.

2. Theme: To explain the beginning of all creation and trace the lineage and lives of God's chosen people from

     the first man, Adam, to Moses and to show the unfolding of God's plan to save man from sin.

3. Genesis is the book of "beginnings."  In it is seen the beginnings of:

a. All created things - chapters 1-2

b. Mankind and marriage - 1:24 - 2:25

c. Sin, punishment and cleansing - chapters 3-10

d. Various nations - chapter - 11

e. A chosen nation - chapters 12-50

f. Promises and covenants of God - 3:14-15; 9:8ff; ch. 15

g. God's entire scheme of redemption

 

III. About The Messiah (or Christ - John 1:41)

        1. 3:15 - Satan would someday injure the Christ (in the crucifixion) but the Christ would fatally injure Satan

            (overcome death through the resurrection) (Hebrews 2:14-15).

        2. 12:1-3; 18:18; 22:18 - The Christ would be from the seed of Abraham and would bless all the earth with the

            opportunity of salvation.

        3. 17:19 - The Christ would be from the seed of Isaac, the son of Abraham (Matthew 1:1-16)

        4. The Christ would be from the seen of Jacob, the son of Isaac, the son of Abraham, and would bless all the earth

            with the opportunity of salvation.

 

IV.   Applications - Lessons

        1. Sin separates us from God and His blessings - 2:16-17
