I.  BACKGROUND

        1. Author - Nahum the prophet:  1:1

        2. Date - Approximately 614 - 612 B.C.

        3. Setting - The Assyrian Empire had been a mighty and bloody nation but God had used them to fulfill His purposes.  It had

            been warned before to repent or be destroyed  (see Jonah)  and had repented: but, by this time had returned to its violent and

            ungodly way.

 

II. PURPOSE OF THE BOOK

        1. Key Verses:  1:2-3;  7;  2:1;  13;  3:1;  5

        2. Theme:  The utter destruction upon the city of Ninevah, the capitol of Assyria.  Its destruction was the result of its extreme

            wickedness

                1) True nature of God:  1:1-9

                2) Judgment of God:  1:10 - 2:13

                3) Sins of Ninevah:  3:1-4

                4) Consequences of their sins:  3:5-19
