SUFFICIENCY OF JESUS' SACRIFICE

I. TEXTUAL THOUGHTS

                1.  Isaiah 53:2-10 - the prophets knew of one who would be sacrificed for the sins of mankind.

                2.  John 11:49-52 - Jesus' own leaders prophesied he would be sacrificed for the good of his people.

                3.  1 Corinthians 1:22-23 - the crucifixion of Jesus was/is a stumbling block to the Jews.

                4.  John 12:24-28 - God himself approved of Jesus' sacrifice, that we might live.

                5.  John 3:16; Romans 5:6-10 - the sacrifice proves God's love.

                6.  Luke 24:25-27,32 - with Jesus' help, we can understand the sacrifice, and live with passion

II. MAIN THEME: Hebrews 10 -  To most Jews, the death of Jesus led to unbelief.  In reality, the author shows the Law and the sacrifices it called for were inadequate.  In fact the sacrifice of Jesus is good, sufficient for all people, for all time.

                1. The Law and its sacrifices were inadequate because:

                                a.  it was only a shadow, not the real thing - :1.

                                b.  it reminded the worshipers of sin - :2-3.

                                c.  the sacrifices had to be done over and over again - :2-3, :11.

                                d.  the blood offered was only the blood of bulls and goats - :4.

                                e.  God really desired obedience, not sacrifices - :5-8, Psalm 40:6, 1 Samuel 15:22.

                2. Jesus and His sacrifice was and remains sufficient because:

                                a.  God said it would be in prophecy - :5-8.

                                b.  Jesus did the will of God - :9, Mark 14:55-56, John 4:34, 12:38, 19:4, 6

                                c.  it is a once for all time gift - :10,12, 14.

                                d.  the Holy Spirit testifies to the sufficiency in :15-16.

                                e.  Jesus' sacrifice does provide forgiveness of sins - :18.

                                f.  this priest Jesus is sitting with God, not standing on earth, ministering - :11-12.

                                g.  therefore, these worshipers have a clear conscience, not a continual reminder of sin:17, :2

                3.  As a result of Jesus' sacrifice, the children of God have:

                                a.  confidence to enter the most holy place - :19.

                                b.  a great high priest over the house of God - :21.

                4.  Now, the children of God finally can and should:

                                a.  draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance - :22.

                                b.  hold unswervingly to the hope we profess - :23.

                                c.  consider how we can provoke each other to love and good works

                                d.  never give up meeting together - :25.

                                e.  encourage one another as long as God gives us opportunity to - :25.

III. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

                1.  Don't get involved in any other sacrifice, it would violate our relationship to Christ - Galatians 2:20.

                2.  Don't get involved in religions that use or encourage such sacrifices - Acts 15:28-29.

                3.  Consider that in Christ your sins are forgiven and not remembered by God - :17.

                4.  Don't be overcome by or dwell on past sin - with confidence and boldness, lay them before God: 19-22.

                5.  Obey the instructions of :19-25.

IV. MEMORY VERSES -  Hebrews 10:19, 22
