10:26-39 - Willful sin is a rebellion against God. Such rebellion will cause one to be
eternally lost if they continue in their rebellion and rejection of the grace
of God. God will destroy all who
reject him and choose a life of sin. 1. Willful sin causes the expectation of judgment - verses 26-27 a. Forsaking the assembly of the saints is willful sin - verse 25 b. Rebellion is like witchcraft - 1 Samuel 15:23; Matt 12:30-31 c. There is no other sacrifice than Jesus; if we reject Him we reject salvation - verse 26: Hebrews 9:12-28; Phil 2:8-11; 3:9; Gal 2:15-21 2. The judgment of the wicked by Jesus will
be worse than being stoned to death under the Law - verses 28-31 a. Jesus knows our thoughts, and will hold us
accountable for the things in our heart - Heb 4:11-13 b. Those who reject Jesus and despise the
gospel story, will be destroyed - verse 29; 2 Peter 2:1-3, 10-22 c. Rejecting the words of Jesus is rejecting
God - Jude 1:17-19; Luke 10:10-16 3. Through many struggles we must enter the
kingdom of God - verses 32-36 a. These Jewish Christians had faced
persecution - verse 32; Acts 8:1; 12:1-3 b. They had friends who were persecuted -
verse 33; 2 Tim 2:10-12; Phil 1:7, 12-14 c. Endurance is required to receive the
promise - verse 36; Rev 2:10; 2 Tim 2:3-5; 1 Cor 9:24-27; Acts 14:22 4. The just shall live by faith - verses 37-39 a. Believing to the saving of our souls - verse 39; Hebrews 5:9; Romans 6:17; 10:14-17; John 20:30-31
III. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS 1. The bible often speaks of categories of people, such as the elect, and those who believe, and those who practice sin. We should understand that the penalty for being in a certain class only applies so long as we continue in that class. Ezek 18:4-28; 1 John 3:5-10. 2. If we repent of sin and turn to God, we will be forgiven - verse 39; James 5:16-20; 1 John 1:8-10 3. The sin unto death, and the sin that will not be forgiven, is rebellion against the teaching of Jesus, and denial of the power of the Holy Spirit which revealed and confirmed the words of Jesus. Those who are in this state of rebellion can never be saved, because they have rejected the salvation that is only in Jesus Christ. One who is in rebellion against God will never have his sins forgiven until he repents and turns again to God. 1 John 5:14-21; Acts 8:13-24; Luke 15:11-32, 2 John :8-9; Jude 1:3-4 4. Salvation is in Jesus Christ, and all who remain faithful in Him are made completely holy and continually cleansed from sin by the blood of Christ. - Rom 3:25-26; 5:9-11; Eph 1:7-14; Heb 10:19-24; I Jn 1:7 IV.
