JESUS’ EXAMPLE

 

 

I. TEXTUAL THOUGHTS

                1.  John 1:1-18 - God became flesh in order to save mankind

                2.  1 Peter 2:21-25 - Christ left us an example, that we should follow Him

                3.  Philippians 2:5-11 - Christ’s example of humility

                4.  John 13:13-16 - Christ’s example of service

                5.  Luke 6:40 - The perfectly trained disciple will be like his teacher

 

II.  MAIN THEME: Hebrews 12 - Since we have the evidence of men of faith from the scriptures, we need to put out trust in Jesus and run until we finish the race.  Jesus endured pain for the purpose of redeeming the children of God, and we must be prepared to suffer pain as we follow Jesus.  Do not get discouraged with suffering, but keep looking to Jesus as our example.

                1.  We have many witnesses of faith from the scriptures - verse 1

                                a.  Abel, who offered a sacrifice pleasing to God by faith - Heb 11:4; 12:24; Gen 4:3-5

                                b.  Abraham, who believed God and became the father of the faithful - Heb 11:8-19; Gen 22:16-18

                2.  Therefore we need to look to Jesus, who is the beginning and end of our faith - verse 2

                                a.  Just as Jesus was faithful to His Father, we need to be faithful -   John 15:10-14; Luke 16:9-13; Rom 1:17

                                b.  We need to have His attitude, willing to suffer to bring children to God - Heb 12:2; Phil 2:5-11

                                c.  We need to be willing to serve like Him - verses 3-4 - John 13:13-16

                3.  We need to accept God’s correction in our lives - verses 5-9

                                a.  Remember the suffering of Jesus, our suffering is not as great as His - verse 4; Matt 26:37-39

                                b.  We suffer for a purpose - verse 2, 5-7, 11; Phil 3:8-11; John 15:10-14; 2 Thess 1:4-5

                                c.  Correction is a demonstration of God’s love - verse 6; 1 Pet 1:6-9

                4.  Therefore strengthen each other that we may win the prize - verses 1, 11-29

                                a.  Run with endurance - verse 1, 9; 1 Cor 9:27; 2 Tim 2:3-5

                                b.  Build each other up - verses 14-15; Romans 12; 1 Cor 12; Jude :20-23

                                c.  Pursue holiness - verse 14; 2 Tim 2:19-22; 1 Pet 1:15; Col 1:21-23

                5.  Rejecting God will bring destruction - verses 14-17, 25, 29;

                                a.  For those who sin willfully - Heb 10:26-31; Acts 5:1-11; 2 Peter 2:20-22

                                b.  For those who refuse to hold on to Jesus - verses 2, 28; 1 Cor 15:1-4

                                c.  For those who refuse to obey the gospel - 2 Thess 1:6-10

                6.  Looking to Jesus for grace will bring a wonderful prize - verses 22-24,

                                a.  A kingdom that cannot be shaken - verse 28; Heb 11:16;  2 Peter 1:11; Luke 1:33; Dan 2:44

                                b.  Having our names written in heaven - verses 22-23; Phil 3:20; 4:3; Rev 3:12; 21:27

 

III.  PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

                1.  We must examine and accept the evidence of the scriptures to have a strong faith - John 20:30-31;

                      John 6:63, 68; 12:48-50; 1 Tim 4:6; 6:3-12;

                2.  We must keep looking to Jesus for righteousness and power - verse 2; Phil 2:5-13; 3:8-11; 2 Cor 3:18

                3.  Suffering for righteousness if part of following Jesus - verses 3-9; 1 Peter 2:21-25

                4.  Refusing to follow Jesus will result in certain destruction - verses 25, 29; Heb 10:26-31; 2 Thes 1:6-10

                5.  We can have great confidence in the promises of God - verses 22-24, 28; Romans 8:31-39
