DANGER OF NEGLECT

 

I.  TEXTUAL THOUGHTS

                1.  1 Corinthians 10:1-13 - Israel under the Law is an example for us of God’s power and justice

                2.  1 Corinthians 15:20-28 - Death is the last enemy that will be destroyed at the resurrection

                3.  Matthew 28:18 - All authority in heaven and on earth is given to Jesus

                4.  1 Corinthians 15:1-4 - We must hold fast to Jesus for the hope of eternal life

                5.  Hebrews 7:24-25 - Because of His eternal life, Jesus is able to save those who are in Him

 

II.  MAIN THEME:  Hebrews 2:1-8 - Because Jesus is reigning until all His enemies are defeated, we need to listen to His message, and accept His salvation.  The judgment under the Law of Moses should convince us that God will keep His word, so we should know the promised blessings and judgment of Christ will all come about.

                1.  We must obey the teachings of Jesus - verses 1-4

                                a.  because we have the example of Israel under the Law - verse 2; 1 Cor 10:1-13

                                b.  because we have seen the love of God demonstrated on the cross - verse 3; John 3:16

c.        because the message was proved with power by the Holy Spirit - verse 4; John 20:30-31;

Mark 16:17-20

d.       because we will drift away if we do not hold fast to Jesus - verse 1; 1 Cor 15:1-4;

Heb 10:23-26; 2 Tim 1:13

                2.  All things are under the authority of Jesus - verses 5-8

a.        Jesus’ authority is over the angels - verse 5; 1 Peter 3:22

b.       Yet He was a man like you and me - verse 6; John 1:14; Matt 11:19; Mark 15:39; Rom 5:15;

1 Cor 15:47 1 Tim 2:5

c.        First he was made lower than the angels - verse 7; Phil 2:8-11; John 19:17-30

e.        Then He was exalted over all things - verses 7-8; Matt 28:18; Col 1:15-18; Acts 5:30-31

f.         Death will be subjected to Him at the resurrection of the last day - verse 8; 1 Cor 15:26,

51-58; John 5:28-29; Phil 3:10-11; 1 Pet 1:3-5

 

III.  PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS

                1.  Jesus the Son, the Father, and the Holy Spirit are the one God we should worship

a.        We should not worship the angels, for Jesus is over them - verse 8; Matt 28:18; Col 2:18

b.       We should not worship Mary - verse 7; John 19:26-27; Matt 12:46-50; 1 Tim 2:5

c.        We must not worship the things of this world - verse 1; Rom 12:2; Eph 2:1-3; 1 Tim 6:6-11;

James 4:4; I Jn 2:15-17

d.       We must worship the true and living God - verse 8; Deut 6:4-5; Exodus 20:2-6; Isaiah 9:6-7;

Matt 28:19 (use water to show the nature of God.  .  Water is found in three forms: ice, vapor,

and liquid.  The ice can represent the Father; the liquid can represent Jesus, the water of life;

and the vapor can represent the Holy Spirit, which is invisible.)

                2.  We must listen to Jesus and obey Him if we want to receive the promised eternal life - verses 1, 3;

     1 Cor 15:1-4; Heb 4:5-19; Mark 16:15-16

                3.  The hope of the resurrection is real - verse 3; 1 Cor 15:4-8; John chapter 20
